Women Box is a a music-theatre event produced by Size Zero Opera in celebration of the inclusion of women’s boxing in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the rise of the female conductor. The performance features two new chamber opera commissions; Training Is the Opposite by Jennifer Walshe and Women Conduct by Laura Bowler, both for string quartet and mezzo soprano.

I have been realising the live electronics required in Walshe’s Training Is The Opposite. The first performances were at Kings Place, London on 7th and 8th August as part of the Tête à Tête Opera Festival and featured Laura Bowler and the Bozzini Quartet. The singer plays a female boxer in a training gym and as part of her regime she plays some Tai Chi. I also choreographed a short Tai Chi sequence for Laura, though the most demanding aspect of her preparation for the part has been the boxing training with former World Champion Cathy ‘The Bitch’ Brown.

There is a second run of performances featuring the Ligeti Quartet as part of the Grimeborn Festival at the Arcola Theatre, London on 25-28th August 2014. More information and tickets available at the Arcola website.
