Humanhood Dance

I am associate composer with Humanhood, a contemporary dance company established by artistic directors Rudi Cole and Julia Robert Parez based in Birmingham and Barcelona. Whilst a relatively young company, Humanhood’s repertoire is expanding and they tour their work internationally.

Humanhood’s work reveals a curiosity for physics and human consciousness; observing and questioning the reality we live in. Humanhood is a platform for exchange, interaction & human creative interconnection.

Humanhood’s creative process involves collaboration with artists from different disciplines including scientists, costume and light designers and musicians. I first worked with Rudi and Julia, who are also company choreographers and dancers, in 2016 on their first full length piece ZERO when I composed and designed a surround sound music score. We are interested in the use of sound in space, using ambisonic techniques and multiple loudspeakers to create an immersive sound experience for the audience that establishes a dialogue with the other elements of the performance. ZERO employed this spatial approach to sound within a theatre context and our second collaboration Orbis does so in an outdoor setting. Plans are underway to also incorporate multichannel sound design into HumanhoodPractice intensives which feature live instrumental and electronic musicians. We will be developing a new ensemble piece Torus in 2018

Humanhood are regularly supported by Arts Council England and have been resident artists at various organisations and institutions including DanceXchange Birmingham, mac birmingham, Deda Derby, University Of Birmingham, Sala Hiroshima Barcelona. A 15 min extract of ZERO won 1st Prize at Certamen Coreografico de Madrid 2016.
