JEKYLL & HYDE
I worked on the 2019 Birmingham Rep production of Evan Placey’s Jekyll & Hyde. The show was performed by The Young Rep, the Rep’s youth theatre company for young people aged 14-18.
Placey’s script is a radical, feminist retelling of the story with the three lead characters being female roles. It is set both in Victorian and contemporary England and manages to blend gothic horror with a modern thriller. To reflect these contrasting styles for the first Act, which is set in the Victorian era, I composed music in the style of gothic horror film scores with an orchestral palette. The script demanded music for the multiple scene changes, dramatic music for the murders and Jekyll/Hyde transformations and music for a seedy Soho bar/brothel, for which I made arrangements of music hall songs. In the second act, which slips between a contemporary setting and the Victorian world, I drew on the themes in the first act to make electronic arrangements and additional music.
Jekyll & Hyde was performed at Birmingham Rep, The House, 18-27 April 2019.

“With echoes of Frank Wedekind, Martin McDonagh and Black Mirror, this is a playful, promiscuous retelling…It offers no easy answers. But for even daring to entertain darkly radical remedies for injustice, this is thrilling stuff.”
“It is uncompromisingly dark and at times – downright confrontational. Overall this gender swapping Jekyll and Hyde is a gothic delight.”
“A brave adaptation indeed, with powerful central performances that show great promise and visual sequences stunning in their originality and impact.”
